This Sunday we read the great and familiar story of God calling Samuel in the temple. I have always felt more like Samuel , young and new in ministry and ready for a new thing. But when I met with my new United Church colleague right ... Continue reading ...

Hi everyone,
St. Philip's are worshipping this week with a Carols and Lessons service and St. John's is marking the Third Sunday of Advent with the assigned readings. I could never comment on all 9 lessons so I will focus on the readings for St. John's. However there is a connection in that the theme is obviously (you do not need an English degree to spot the theme in the
readings ) joy. What better way to express joy than in singing God's praises as we will do this week at St. Philip's and... Continue reading ...

Readings; Acts 1 : 1-11, Psalm 93, Ephesians 1: 15-23, Luke 24: 44-53 Thanks to feasting on the Word , Year A , Volume 2 pgs 496-519
Hi everyone. Here are my first thoughts for this Sunday when we will
celebrate the Ascension. Some rushed very elementary first thoughts this week. Hope they stimulate
your thoughts and enrich Sunday's worship.
Because Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday we rarely give the feast the due it deserves. When you read the stories of Ascension it was clearly import...

Lent 5: Matters of Life and Death, Or Should I say Matters of Death and Life

Readings: Ezekiel 37: 1 -14, Psalm 130, Romans 8: 6-11, John 11: 1-45
Thanks to Feasting on the Word, Year A Volume 2 pgs 122 – 145 and The New interpreters Bible Volume 9, pgs 684- 695
In a way all of our readings seem a bit out of place in Lent and would be better suited for Easter when we celebrate the resurrection of Christ and the sure and certain hope of our own resurrection.
We will be reading the famous story of Ezekiel being taken by the Lord to a valley of dry bones in the desert...

The Light we see with; the shepherd who truly sees into our hearts:
Seeing is obviously a theme throughout our readings. In the famous story of Samuel visiting Jesse to anoint one of his sons as the new king, Samuel and Jesse can only the see the physical stature and features of the eldest son as determining the obvious man for the job. But they do not see the heart( the character and will ) of the youngest and smallest son, David, who is not even considered a candidate. But God sees Davidâ€...

This week there is an obvious theme of water running (pardon the pun) through the Exodus reading and the Gospel reading. In Exodus the people are thirsty in the wilderness. God seems to have brought them out of slavery in Egypt only to abandon them at a place in the wilderness where there is no water. They complain in fear and anger and lose their trust in Moses and God. They threaten to kill Moses. But God through Moses provides water. In the Go...

I am running out of time this week so I include my thoughts on the O.T. reading and give you a link I discovered that does what I attempt to do each week but I think does a lot better job. These reflections will get us thinking about the readings http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/stw/2014/02/03/bible-study-7-epiphany-a/

Readings for Sunday February 9th: Isaiah 58: 1- 12, Psalm 112: 1-9, 1Corinthians: 2: 1- 16, Matthew 5: 13- 20Thanks to Feasting on the Word Year A Volume 1 pgs. 314- 337The reading from Isaiah is probably addressing the post-exillic community whohave returned from exile in Babylon and are attempting to re-establishthemselves . You can see in vs. 12 for instance a reference to how if theylive justly God will guide them and their ancient ruins will be rebuilt andthe streets will be restored. On ... Continue reading ...

Readings Micah 6:1-8, Psalm 15, 1 Corinthians 1: 18-31, Matthew 5:1- 12Thanks to: Feasting On The Word Year A Volume 1 pgs. 290- 313A strong theme in the readings for this week is our moral behavior as weseek to do God's will. For example the Psalm declares that the people who donot slander, do not to do evil to their friends, do not take bribes againstthe innocent and stand by their oaths even till it hurts are the ones whomay and will abide in the Lord's tent. How we live is a very worthy... Continue reading ...

Readings Isaiah 9:1-4, Psalm 27: 1, 4-9, 1 Corinthians 1: 10-18, Matthew 4 :12- 23 Thanks to Feasting on The Word for its insights.Because it is St. Philip's Annual meeting on Sunday and St. John's nextweek , I will be looking at the readings from this angle which means I maylook at 1 Corinthians because it is a letter to a church and sort of a peptalk to a congregation ( pep talk might be too kind a description as Paulwas addressing some serious issues in the church ).Or perhaps it would b... The Scriptures with Natural Church Development in Mind

This Sunday I am going to be working on my diocesan job preaching inBancroft and doing an NCD survey for them. So I will be approaching theScriptures with Natural Church Development in mind.Hence my first thoughts for this week will be through the lens of the NCDquestions and the 9 quality characteristics. Perhaps this will remind us ofour own NCD plan and ministry.I think you have to stretch the imagination a bit to find all of thequality characteristics in the Sunday's readings but you wo... Hi everyone and a Happy and Blessed New Year to you all. It was a great joyto worship with you this Christmas season. Here are my first thoughts on theBible readings for Epiphany which we will be celebrating this Sunday. As we are beginning a new year I come to our readings wondering what God iscalling us to do in the Parish Of Marysburgh in 2014. Although our readingsfor Epiphany may not tell us specifically what we should do I think they doshed a bright light on what we are called to be abou... Continue reading ...
Third Sunday in Advent

Hi everyone,
Sorry I did not get anything out to you last week. I was busy with the Prodigal Son Retreat Day.
This week I am only preaching at St. John’s as we are having a Carol and Lessons service in Milford. So I will briefly comment on the regularly assigned readings for the Third Sunday in Advent as I have a hard enough time thinking about 4 readings let alone 9!!
The Third Sunday in Advent is often referred to as Rejoice Sunday and some churches use rose as the liturgical colour for ve...

Readings for Sunday, October 20, 2013
Hi
again everyone,
After
a break for Thanksgiving, we are back to Jeremiah 31:27-34. However the message
is considerably brighter than the last time we listened to the
lamentation of the weeping prophet. In fact a theme from the Old
Testament reading is hope. We are going from the absolute darkness
of exile to the light of God’s Day. This reading speaks of God’s
faithfulness. Notice how all the promises are in the first
person,
" I will make a new covenant; I will put my law ...
