First Thoughts From The Rev. Canon David Smith:

Most weeks Fr. David sends out an e-mail with his first thoughts on the upcoming Sunday readings. These reflections are designed to encourage people to consider the readings before they come to worship which we hope will enrich Sunday worship. People are invited to respond to David with their own thoughts and sometimes interesting ideas and conversations occur that end up in the sermon. If you would like to receive these weekly e-mails e-mail David at dsmith@ontario.anglican.ca  .

Readings; Acts 1 : 1-11, Psalm 93, Ephesians 1: 15-23, Luke 24: 44-53 Thanks to feasting  on the Word , Year A , Volume 2 pgs 496-519

Hi everyone. Here are my first thoughts for this Sunday when we will
celebrate the Ascension.  Some rushed very elementary first thoughts this week. Hope they stimulate
your thoughts and enrich Sunday's worship.

Because Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday we rarely give the feast the due it deserves. When you read the stories of Ascension it was clearly import...

I am running out of time this week so I include my thoughts on the O.T. reading and give you a link I discovered that does what I attempt to do each week but I think does  a lot better job.  These reflections will get us thinking about the readings       http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/stw/2014/02/03/bible-study-7-epiphany-a/

Living with Integrity...

Readings for Sunday February 9th: Isaiah 58: 1- 12, Psalm 112: 1-9, 1
Corinthians: 2: 1- 16, Matthew 5: 13- 20

Thanks to Feasting on the Word Year A Volume 1 pgs. 314- 337

The reading from Isaiah is probably addressing the post-exillic community who
have returned from exile in Babylon and are attempting to re-establish
themselves . You can see in vs. 12 for instance a reference to how if they
live justly God will guide them and their ancient ruins will be rebuilt and
the streets will be restored.

Walk Humbly With God...

Readings Micah 6:1-8, Psalm 15, 1 Corinthians 1: 18-31, Matthew 5:1- 12

Thanks to: Feasting On The Word Year A Volume 1 pgs. 290- 313

A strong theme in the readings for this week is our moral  behavior as we
seek to do God's will. For example the Psalm declares that the people who do
not slander, do not to do evil to their friends, do not take bribes against
the innocent and stand by their oaths even till it hurts are the ones who
may and will abide in the Lord's tent.  How we live is a very worthy...

Readings Isaiah 9:1-4, Psalm 27: 1, 4-9, 1 Corinthians 1: 10-18, Matthew 4 :
12- 23 Thanks to Feasting on The Word for its insights.

Because it is St. Philip's  Annual meeting on Sunday and St. John's next
week , I will be looking at the readings from this angle which means I may
look at 1 Corinthians because it is a letter to a church and sort of a pep
talk to a congregation ( pep talk might be too kind a description as Paul
was addressing some  serious issues in the church ).Or perhaps it would b...

The Scriptures with Natural Church Development in Mind

Posted by Emily Sanderson on Friday, January 17, 2014,

This Sunday I am going to be working on my diocesan job preaching in
Bancroft and doing an NCD survey for them. So I will be approaching the
Scriptures with Natural Church Development in mind.

Hence my first thoughts for this week will be through the lens of the NCD
questions and the 9 quality characteristics. Perhaps this will remind us of
our own NCD plan and ministry.

I think you have  to stretch the imagination a bit  to find all of the
quality characteristics in the Sunday's readings but you wo...

Reflections on reading from Isaiah

Posted by Emily Sanderson on Friday, January 10, 2014,
Hi everyone,

Trust that you are all well and warming up a bit. From the forecast we might
be able to wear shorts to church on Sunday.

Here are my first thoughts on this week's readings. To stimulate my thinking
I have read and made use of the commentary from Feasting on the Word Year A
Volume 1 pages 218- 241 , David Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor , Editors

We continue to read from Isaiah, Isaiah 42:1-9 . Our reading is probably set
in a time when the people of Judah are in exile in Babylon just ...

Third Sunday in Advent

Posted by Emily Sanderson on Friday, December 13, 2013,

Hi everyone,

Sorry I did not get anything out to you last week. I was busy with the Prodigal Son Retreat Day.

This week I am only preaching at St. John’s as we are having a Carol and Lessons service in Milford. So  I will briefly comment on the regularly assigned readings for the Third Sunday in Advent as I have a hard enough time thinking about 4 readings let alone 9!!

The Third Sunday in Advent is often referred to as Rejoice Sunday and some churches use rose as the liturgical colour for ve...
